Cretan dishes at its best!

Hidden deep in the lavish country side of the Rethymno region, you will find one of the best kept secretes for Cretan food lovers. Just 5 kilometers south east of the famous Monastery of Arkadi (also a must visit whilst in Crete!) you will discover a little known taverna called ‘Violis’. https://goo.gl/maps/gZ422piSrcD2

Visting Crete you just don’t need to be a meat lover, there are loads of vegetarian dishes to enjoy. For example, Boureki, a main course vegetarian dish made from layers of courgette, potatoes, onions and cheese. There is also Briam, the Greek version of ratatouille. Briam uses all the fabulous vegetables that are grown in Crete and found around the taverna area.

Stuffed courgette flowers (zucchini) are not on every menu in the Crete, but will certainly be found at Violis Taverna.

When it comes to meat dishes, you need to try Violis Lamb with stamnagathi (a wild green). A juicy homegrown own lamb, baked in lemon and exquisite seasons. Alternatively, you can try the Smoked Pork (Hirina apakia). Succulent smoked pork pieces, made by a carefully multi-day cooking process. If its a BBQ steak you want, the local lamb, pork or beef will hit the spot!

The hospitable staff at Violis will walk you through the choices and explain the Cretan dishes.

But they will certainly tempt you to try and keep you guessing on the tastes that you are about to experience.

You will relish all this food set behind the gasping setting of the Rethymno country side, with a scenic view that will promise to make you smile.

S&K VILLAS can arrange daily excursions to many destinations around Chania and Rethymno, from food trips to wine tours.
